We would like to offer a huge congratulations to Maria Ahmad, the winner of the Zeshan Qureshi Award for Outstanding Achievement in Medical Education 2018.
Zeshan Qureshi Award for Outstanding Achievement in Medical Education - Maria Ahmad

Maria is a third year medical student at Barts and The London Medical School. She is an innovative medical educator with a wealth of experience teaching school pupils and medical students alike and we are very excited to follow her future career.
Before medical school, Maria led her St John Ambulance Cadet unit, delivering first aid teaching through games and scenario-based sessions. As well as teaching these skills herself, Maria encouraged others to become medical educators and lead sessions.

“The main challenge was ensuring that my teaching was simple enough for those who had never done any first aid before to understand and remember, while still engaging older Cadets who had learnt these skills previously.”

Maria is also a Senior Trainer and Assessor at Bart’s City Life Saver, a charity that teaches basic life support to the public, medical students and professionals. Aside from teaching sessions, she supports and mentors newer team members.
As well as her work teaching first aid, Maria is passionate about helping school pupils get into medical school. She has helped to run several multiple mini interview (MMI) courses and has personally tutored 140 students, helping them with their applications. In order to reach those in other countries, Maria writes blog posts for aspiring and current medical students, which have been read by over 37,000 people from 218 countries!

On top of all of this fantastic work, Maria held a leading role in the Barts Teddy Bear Hospital programme, which educates school pupils on public health. She currently teaches younger medical students as part of the Barts Medical Education Support Society and acts as Teaching Coordinator for Barts Language and Culture Society, balancing all this with her extensive involvement in the Barts Pre-hospital Care Programme.

“For me, Medical Education is so much more than just passing on knowledge. It’s about encouraging enthusiasm for learning and passion for Medicine through innovative and interactive teaching methods. It’s about mentoring students and providing constructive feedback to support them with their learning. It’s about empowering members of the public, students and professionals alike with vital knowledge and skills they can apply in future.”

It is clear that you are making a huge difference to a large number of people, Maria. What an incredibly worthy winner of this year’s award.
