Zeshan Qureshi Award for Outstanding Achievement in Medical Education - Karen Borges

Karen is a 5th year medical student at King’s College London, where she founded ‘Leaders in Health’. This innovative society provides education on leadership skills to medical students through a curriculum she devised herself in alignment with the Faculty of Medical Leadership and Management’s Indicative Undergraduate Curriculum.

“I believe that every doctor is a leader. At a minimum, the role of the doctor is to be the head of a multidisciplinary team in charge of providing patients with the best possible care.”

The lecture series that Karen and her colleagues have created is entitled ‘Educate, Inspire, Equip’. Lectures were delivered by leaders in their field and live streamed to students on peripheral placements. The team are now working on making this successful series available to a wider group of medical students across the UK.

“I wanted to educate students on a wide variety of relevant topics. I hoped that the speakers’ successes would inspire students to think differently about their own careers and realise the leverage they held as future healthcare practitioners.”
