Dr Patrick Byrne MB BCh BAO, MRCGP, MRCSEd, FRCP Edin.

General Medical Physician and GP, Belford Hospital, Fort William

Patrick is a rather unusual doctor because he is both a GP and a Consultant Physician.  Most people train in one speciality. Others start out and train in one area, sometimes finishing training before changing direction for another area in medicine.  Patrick, however, is dually accredited and on both Specialist and General Pactice Registers with the UK General Medical Council.  More than that, he actively practices, appraises and revalidates in both disciplines.  As if that were not sufficient, he is also MRCSEd (by examination) and on their faculty for Training the Trainers.  With DCH, DRCOG, BMedSci (& USMLE) under his belt, it was alleged that he is a medical polymath at his FRCP induction ceremony, but he maintains he is simply good at passing exams.  He is an examiner for both the University of Aberdeen and the University of Edinburgh Final Exams, and the MRCP PACES examination, held annually at Belford Hospital, Fort William. He also was the senior clinical editor for ‘The Unofficial Guide to Passing OSCEs’, and a senior reviewer for several other titles.

Outwith medicine, he plays piano, guitar, bass and clarinet.  Both Patrick and his wife, Sarah (Consultant Surgeon, Fort William), are custodian to a rather special and spectacular Barn Owl called Spook.  Owl-viewing & handling is available to students visiting Fort William.  Fort William is very popular, so book your elective ASAP.  Further information: http://belford-hospital-150.co.uk/
