Well done to Runner Up Timothy Shun Man Chu, a fourth year medical student at Newcastle University.
Timothy has had an interest in education since his first year at medical school, when he became involved with Discover Medicine as a student ambassador. This role involved organising outreach programmes to encourage disadvantaged local school students to apply to study medicine.
Since then, Timothy has co-organised two surgical career roadshows and a national conference through his role as Vice President of the Surgical Society; managed a regional surgical mentorship scheme with 120 participants in the North East; and works with the Academic Medicine society at Newcastle University to organise research taster days and workshops.
Timothy developed a peer-led Surgical Skills for Students (SSS) course in his region after recognising that surgical training was relatively limited at an undergraduate level at his institute. This course has been developed with sustainability in mind, as participants are encouraged to return as tutors the next year. It has been a huge success, receiving prizes from The Association of the Study of Medical Education, the Healthcare Leadership Academy and the British Conference of Undergraduate Research.
“Medical education is a rewarding field in medicine, as you influence future doctors and in turn pose a positive impact on the wider society. I hope to continue contributing to the field to shape the next generation of doctors through the projects I have been setting up and taking part in.”
Nationally, Timothy is also a project co-ordinator for the National Student Association of Medical Research, hospital lead for a STARSurg collaborative research project and regional representative for the Junior Association for the Study of Medical Education and ENT UK. Timothy is also currently a principal investigator for a pilot qualitative anatomy education study, and will be looking into developing it to a national scale.
